Biking yesterday

I did 12 miles on the Assabet River Rail Trail. It’s paved and starts in Hudson and ends in Marlborough.

Some interesting points:

1. At a dangerous intersection where I almost got run over last year, now has some kind of sensor that makes a light blink so the cars stop for me now.
2. Going out, (Hudson to Marlborough), is about 90% uphill, which made for an awesome time coming back. I think I averaged about 12mph.
3. I passed a young boy, in the 9-12 age, smoking a cigarette, which leads me to believe that his parents/older sibling does it. Way to add another winner to society…. good parenting on that one….
4. The entire trail is only 5.6 miles and ends somewhere in Marlborough, at a rather sketchy looking intersection. I had to do some loops and backtrack to get in the 12 miles. I was planning on trying for 20 miles, but that seems so farsighted now. I probably could have done it, I had plenty of energy, but judging by how sore I am today, I probably won’t bike for another day to two. Though I have to bike to get my HDL in better place.

In other news, I finally bought 5 gallons of water so I can brew that Red that’s been sitting around since Christmas. Maybe I’ll do that soon.

Weekending

Somewhat wasted weekend. But at least Nick was involved, which is always a bonus.

We went to IKEA to check out this table. It was a lot shorter than I was expecting and I really like it, but Nick had some other thoughts about it. Didn’t end up purchasing it. I think it would be perfect for the space once the fish tank is gone….I might still get it anyway.

Rented the move Young Victoria. It was a good movie. I guess it’s the actual story of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Yay history and love story. :)

We went for a bike ride for a max of 7 miles.

Cleaned the apartment, sort of. I ended up playing far too much World of Warcraft instead. /cheer 59 Feral/Resto Druid  ^_^

I made elbow pads for my computer chair out of some foam that came in a package and then sewed some black soft felt over them. Go me. The chair is so much more comfortable for my elbows now. :D

And that’s about the extent of my weekend. Not a very exciting one at all. I would like to go somewhere though… an adventure to Baltimore if I can scrape up some funds for a hotel…

Lake Massabesic

This past Saturday I went on another long bike ride with my boyfriend, his friend, wife, mother, and dog. We did 16.2 miles around/near Lake Massabesic in New Hampshire. It was a converted rail trail, unpaved, and messy. Huge puddles everywhere, I was filthy by the time the ride was over.

But it was wicked fun. There were some short little tunnels that went under the highway here and there, which were awesome. I saw some red squirrels, which aren’t very common where I live, some ducks, and a bunch of newts in a pond where we stopped to have our picnic lunch. I should have brought my camera. There were a bunch of stones piled on top of each other and one was in the shape of a teddy bear. (sort of) Turns out the area is “private” property. The owner stopped by on our way out and we chatted for a bit. The guy didn’t care that we ate there, I guess people go through there all the time, and especially since it’s on a the rail trail and it’s a snowmobiling trail in the winter. Nice guy.

The way out actually seemed more difficult because we were stopping at all the intersections for the group to catch up, but on the way back, we all kind of did our own pace. The total moving time was around two hours. I had a blast.

On a coincidental side note; Tim’s mother, over the phone, thought my name was Jane. Then we talked with the owner of the pond that we had lunch at, and, even though I said my name was Jen, he heard Jane.  Here’s the coincidental part: About a month or two ago, I thought about creating a pen-name for the books I’ve been writing, and that name I came up with is Jane Oldns.  I hadn’t told anyone about “Jane” so talk about coincidental. So now this is what I’ve come up with: Jane writes the books, Jen rides the bike. Works for me.

Weekend Wrap-up

Quick post today.  I finally got some biking in for the first time this year. A few miles during my lunch break on Friday, then a nice long bike ride with my boyfriend and his friend in Manchester on Saturday. About damn time, I was beginning to feel my winter blubber tack on… ugh.

I’m a little disappointed that the weather is looking pretty crappy today, though my legs could use a break after Saturday.

I also raked out my garden so I can actually get a head-start on it this year.

Oh, and I added a new page to keep track of my biking mileage this year. So far I’ve done a total of 18 miles. Yay! ‘Course… it could also be to keep track of how much a slacker I’ve been… >.<

Finally

So I finally went biking riding today after, I think, like four weeks of not doing anything. Today was such a lovely day. I did my seven and half miles to Assabet National Park and nearly ran over a poor little garter snake. Missed it though, phew. So after a four week hiatus, I was pretty wiped when I got home, thought I was gonna puke more than once, but it was entirely spur of the moment after going to Dunkin Donuts and ingesting their egg and cheese croissant with an ice coffee. Not the best meal, in the least, before going biking, uhg. Oh well, but it was good to go biking.
Then Maynard had fireworks tonight, that was great. Good show this year, a whole 5-10 minutes and a ton of fireworks. Good job, Maynard

Chilly Saturday in September

I finally went biking today after two whole weeks of sitting on my butt. {Well, not the whole time}
It was all of 60° outside and windy. I took my usual trip down to the Assabet River refuge, but instead of driving there, I biked, so it added an extra two miles onto my trip for a total of 7½ miles today. Assabet has been getting a little easy for me, it’s how I can tell I’m getting better at mountain biking. The army dudes were there today. Pulling up (or placing) some telephone poles. And here I thought they had abandon the place.

So on my way home, on the road, this biker on his skinny-tire road bike passes me as I’m in the process of up shifting to my third gear. I kind of think “jerk” right off the bat, then laugh to myself, “lets take your wussy bike out on the trail and see how fast you go.” Yea, I’ll admit, I have some road rage, I guess it doesn’t matter if I’m in my car or not. Oh well.

Then I get home and nearly fall down dismounting my bike because my legs are so full of jelly I can barely stand. Good trip, though I had to shower just to thaw out. This might be my last biking trip of the season. It’s already getting too cold me little ol’ me outside.

But on the upside, getting chillier means it’s better conditions for brewing beer! And I did just get my wort chiller, so the next batch is in order. AND!!!! Harvest Spice is back at John Harvard’s AND Shipyard has their pumpkin beer out, which means, Sam Adams Cream Stout is going to be coming out soon, horray!

Until next time
